High mast lighting and points heating renewals

Leeds central station is the busiest station in Yorkshire. Due to increased passenger demand, the station required remodelling to deliver the increase in capacity.

This substantial  investment included the installation of additional platforms, remodelling of the existing junctions track layout and associated signalling modifications.

Our team were involved in the design of high mast lighting which supported improved maintenance access and the points heating of the switches and crossings to ensure they operated in adverse weather conditions and delivered the reliability requirements of the operator.

Aspects of the project delivered by Andromeda included…

  • The design of lighting to railway group and network rail company standards
  • Existing and proposed junctions were surveyed and designed to ensure appropriate lux levels and uniformity for maintenance activity to be delivered safely
  • Control of light pollution to avoid over spill into neighbouring city centre properties
  • A number of 30m high raise and lower columns were designed and installed to meet the remit requirements
  • Power supply to sub-mains and functional load, protection and cabling designs completed
  • The design of points heating of 65 switches and crossings in and around Leeds station
  • Protection design from Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to control cabinets
  • Optimisation of cable sizing
  • Electrical schematics and designs produced using electrical software tools
